If we are a newbie ham, we may have some confusion about what are the software, firmware, and hardware? Why do the experienced hams always talk about them?

Software is the set of user programs running on a system that is designed to be updated often by those users. Using the programming cable connects the radio and computer, through the software we can read data from radio and write data to radio. We can edit and change settings on the software and write to the radio.

Hardware is the physical components of a system that the software and firmware running on, and that is updated least often (if ever)

Software is the most temporary and malleable. Firmware is semi-permanent software that’s tied more directly to the hardware and updated less often, and hardware is the physical component that is mostly permanent.
